Creation Care: Caring for God’s Good Creation

At King of Kings Dulles South, we believe that caring for creation is part of what it means to follow Jesus. The world around us is not simply something we inhabit. It is God’s good creation—a gift entrusted to all of us. From the opening pages of Scripture, we hear the story of a God who creates, calls creation good, and continues to sustain the world with love and care. Creation care, then, is not something separate from our faith. It is one way we live out our calling to love God, love our neighbors, and care for the world God has entrusted to us.

A Church Without Walls

Being a church without a traditional building has taught us something important: the church is not defined by a building.

We worship in a school cafeteria. We gather in parks. We serve alongside community partners. We meet around tables, in neighborhoods, and wherever God calls us. That means we’re always looking for new ways to care for the places where we gather and to reduce the impact our ministry has on the world around us. And recently, that has taken us somewhere unexpected: The sun.

We’re Streaming Green

Thanks to the generosity and knowledge of AR Banx, we recently added a solar-powered battery system to our worship equipment. Our audio and livestream equipment can now be powered by a portable battery system charged by solar energy. That means we can bring microphones, cameras, and livestream equipment with us—even when there isn't an electrical outlet nearby. It gives us greater flexibility to worship outdoors, gather in new places, and bring our online community along with us while also taking another small step toward a greener church campus.

Creation Care as Faith in Action

For us, creation care isn't about finding a perfect solution or pretending that one solar panel will change the world. It's about recognizing that small choices can be expressions of our faith. When we reduce waste, use resources thoughtfully, spend time outside, care for our local environment, and look for more sustainable ways to do ministry, we are practicing gratitude for God's creation and considering the world we are leaving for those who come after us. Creation care is also about our neighbors. The effects of environmental challenges are not experienced equally, and caring for creation is connected to our call to seek the flourishing of our communities, especially those who are most vulnerable.

Following Jesus Into the World

Jesus didn't wait for people to come to a building. He went out into the world to meet people where they were: on roads, along the shoreline, around tables, in homes, and in the ordinary places of everyday life. As a church without walls, we're trying to do a little of the same. We're taking worship into the world, creating spaces where people can encounter God's love, and looking for ways to do that with greater care for the creation that surrounds us.
